Firefighters are working to extinguish a brush fire that has consumed about 8 acres makai of Hualalai Elderly Housing in Kailua-Kona.

Firefighters are working to extinguish a brush fire that has consumed about 8 acres makai of Hualalai Elderly Housing in Kailua-Kona.

The fire, which broke out around noon Friday in vacant land north of Kamaaina Hale, was listed as under control and about 70 percent contained as of 7 a.m. today, according to Hawaii Fire Department officials on the scene this morning. A dozer completed a perimeter during the night.

The firefighters, assisted by a Hawaii County helicopter performing water drops, will spend the day dousing hot spots and flare-ups, according to the officials.

Hualalai Road remains open. Motorists are advised to use caution when driving in the area because firefighters and equipment are working.
